Cirencester Four Seasons Mosaic Commission
I was kindly commissioned to create a Four Seasons mosaic using the Roman Cirencester Four Seasons mosaic (in the Corninium Museum) as a source for my inspiration.
Spring, Flora has a wreath of flowers and a flowering stem over her right shoulder. A bird heralds the beginning of spring.
Summer, the Roman Goddess Ceres wearing a chaplet of leaves and corn with a bunch on her left shoulder and a reaping sickle on her right.
Autumn, Roman Goddess Pomona wearing a circlet of grapes and leaves on her head. She has a pruning knife over her right shoulder ready for the harvest. A leopard-skin cloak is fastened at her left shoulder connecting her with the God Bacchus.
Winter (representing death) is missing in the Cirencester mosaics having been destroyed. But would probably have been cloaked and hooded, holding a bare branch. The people of Corinium relied on agriculture to survive and honoured the seasons in order to promote a good harvest.
Each mosaic measures 40 cm square and will feature in a private home.
